Ivica Olic's brilliant second-half goal gave Hamburg victory over Werder Bremen today as Martin Jol`s men remained undefeated at home in the Bundesliga this season.
Jose Paolo Guerrero opened the scoring in the 167th north German derby in the sixth minute.
Brazil international Diego leveled matters midway through the first half, but Olic bagged the winner 16 minutes from time.
The victory was Hamburg`s sixth in seven games in front of their own fans this season and moved them five points behind leaders Hoffenheim.
Hamburg showed their attacking intent from the outset and it paid dividends when they went in front from a set piece.
Mladen Petric sent in a free-kick from the right wing to the near post which Bremen stopper Tim Wiese did well to push away.
The ball, though, fell straight to Guerrero, who placed a volley in to the same corner from a tight angle.
Diego equalized in the 24th minute, sending a superb free-kick over the wall into the right corner.
Hamburg keeper Frank Rost got a hand on the ball but could only deflect it into his own goal.
The game was stopped for a couple minutes after Bremen captain Frank Baumann was struck by an object in the celebrations directly after the goal.
Baumann seemed unaffected, though, and he produced a last-ditch challenge to block Alex Silva`s shot a minute into first-half injury time.
Neither team were able to create any meaningful chances in the first 20 minutes after the break though Bremen looked the more dangerous.
It was Hamburg, though, who regained the lead in the 74th minute, Olic unleashing a thunderbolt from 22 yards on the right of the area which flew in to the far corner via the left post.
Diego had a chance to pull Bremen level again with six minutes left but could not get enough on his header from six yards.
Piotr Trochowski was then denied by Wiese a minute into injury time when one-on-one with the keeper as Hamburg claimed victory.
