Ryan Meara - New York Red Bulls - walks out to the field at Toyota Park

Like nearly every American, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara can recall where he was on Sept. 11, 2001.

But for Meara, the son of a New York City firefighter, the vivid memories stretch beyond that morning to the days and weeks that followed.

In a story from the New York Post, Meara recounts the aftermath of that horrific day for his family and his father in particular, who was based in the Bronx with the FDNY at the time of the attacks.

“Once [my dad] came home we were so happy to see him and then I remember sitting in our living room and he was going though names of firemen that were missing at the time, and it was a lot of people that we knew," Meara told the New York Post. "It was a scary time, a sad time.”
