Napoli rise in Serie A against Lecce

Bologna

Napoli moved up to third in Serie A with a convincing victory over Lecce.

Marek Hamsik opened the scoring with a penalty in the 11th minute and Michele Pazienza (43) and German Denis (65) added further goals.

The home side squandered a hatful of chances which could have taken them above Juventus into second place, but they never looked like dropping any points as they extended their unbeaten home record this season.

Lecce, on the other hand, could drop into the bottom three should results not go their way tomorrow after their 11th successive game without a win.

The Stadio San Paolo has been a fortress this season with only two points dropped by Napoli, and it proved to be so again tonight as the hosts took the lead after just 11 minutes.

Ezequiel Lavezzi was brought to ground by Francesco Benussi inside the penalty area and Hamsik stepped up to score his seventh goal of the season from the spot.

Once ahead there was no looking back for Napoli, who ran riot and could have built up a cricket score inside the first 45 minutes.

Denis almost got a second in the 21st minute when he struck the ball towards goal on the stretch from a Lavezzi cross, but Benussi stretched even more to push the ball wide of his post.

Lavezzi then volleyed just inches wide from inside the penalty area.

Napoli did go into the break with a two-goal cushion, though, when Pazienza threaded the ball through Benussi's legs from close range after Gianni Munari slipped.

And they could even have been three up, but Denis fired into the side-netting in first-half stoppage time.

Benussi was having a busy night in the Lecce goal and he made another stunning save to deny Walter Gargano early in the second half.

Lecce should have been given a penalty in the 54th minute when Leandro Rinaudo seemed to have fouled Guillermo Giacomazzi inside the penalty area, but the referee decided the contact had been made outside the area and the visitors failed to do anything with the free-kick.

It would only have been a consolation because Napoli were in a buoyant mood.

Denis finally got his name on the scoresheet in the 65th minute. He could hardly have missed when the ball passed through Raffaele Schiavi's legs to reach him in front of goal, and he picked his spot to the right of Benussi.

He tried picking another spot when in a similar position in the 78th minute, but this time he did miss when he had just Benussi to beat.

And so Napoli had to settle for just a three-goal triumph which still lifts them above AC Milan into third place, six points behind leaders Inter Milan who play Chievo tomorrow.
