BUENOS AIRES - Diego Maradona has been named as Boca Juniors' new football consultant.

Club president Pedro Pompilio told Radio La Red that the Argentina legend offered his services as advisor, and the board accepted.

"Diego will be a football advisor to the board and the person we'll consult permanently," said Pompilio, who took over as president after Mauricio Macri left the club to become mayor of Buenos Aires.

"Diego told me he wanted to collaborate with Boca."

Pompilio was delighted by Maradona's offer, saying: "I am totally satisfied. I thanked him a lot.

"I think he will be very useful for the future of Boca."

The club website confirmed: "The most important idol of our club will be involved in Boca's institutional and sporting life again."

The Boca squad fly to Japan on Wednesday as the South American Football Confederation representatives in the FIFA Club World Cup.
