MLS Heineken® Rivalry Week continues Wednesday night when Los Angeles Football Club host the San Jose Earthquakes at Banc of California Stadium.
LAFC (18-3-4) became the first team to clinch an Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoff berth Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium despite playing much of the second half with 10 men after Walker Zimmerman was sent off for his second bookable offense. Carlos Vela opened the scoring with a record-breaking goal in the 64th minute. With 24 goals and 15 assists in 2019, no player in league history has been involved in more goals scored in a single-season. Adama Diomande added the insurance goal in the 82nd minute as LAFC stretched their winning streak to four consecutive games.
San Jose (11-9-5) are winless in three consecutive games after falling to Sporting Kansas City, 2-1, for their second consecutive defeat. Chris Wondolowski scored the lone goal of the first half in the 25th minute, but Benny Feilhaber leveled in the 50th minute and Graham Smith broke the stalemate in the 76th minute with his first MLS goal.
The teams met at Avaya Stadium March 30 with LAFC cruising to a comfortable 5-0 victory as Vela struck for a hat trick and Steven Beitashour and Diego Rossi added a goal apiece.
