Llorente net rallies Villarreal to stunner

Joseba Llorente's strike sealed Villarreal's place in the Champions League quarter-finals after a battling victory over Panathinaikos in Athens.

Manuel Pellegrini's team, who went into the second leg of the first knockout round tie with the disadvantage of having conceded on home soil in the 1-1 draw two weeks ago, opened the scoring just after half-time through Ariel Ibagaza.

Vangelis Mantzios levelled the tie with his fourth goal in six matches before Llorente, who replaced Nihat Kahveci at half-time, drilled home Ibagaza's dinked pass to clinch a 3-2 aggregate victory for the 'Yellow Submarine'.

Mantzios, back in the Panathinaikos side for the first time since the 1-1 first-leg draw, showed glimpses of his skill with a couple of neat twists and turns as the hosts dominated possession.

It was Villarreal, however, who registered the first shot on target through Nihat Kahveci, but the Turkish striker's snapshot was easily gathered by Mario Galinovic.

Giuseppe Rossi and Nihat then had shots blocked as the visitors began to find gaps in the home defense before Pana responded through Gabriel, who prodded a shot over the crossbar from Dimitris Salpingidis' low cross on the half-hour mark.

Giorgos Karagounis then tested Diego López from a free-kick moments before Ibagaza saw an effort ruled out for handball in what was becoming an absorbing encounter.

The best chance of the half fell to Mantzios four minutes after the half-hour following Simao's sublime pass but the striker's left-footed shot was brilliantly saved by López.

Llorente replaced the ineffective Nihat at half-time, but it was Ibagaza who stunned the OACA Spiros Louis stadium crowd with a sumptuous strike to open the scoring just four minutes in.

The 30-year-old Argentinian finished off a flowing move involving Rossi and Joan Capdevilla, beating Galinovic with a first-time strike into the top left corner.

Pana fought back, winning a series of corners and they were rewarded for their pressure six minutes later when Mantzios powered a header past López from Karagounis' corner for his fourth goal in six games.

Villarreal remained dangerous on the break and the Spaniards took the lead for the second time in the match with 20 minutes remaining when substitute Llorente drilled home from Ibagaza's pass following a another lightning-quick counter-attack.

Pana's spirit seemed broken by Llorente's strike and the visitors were able to see out the remainder of the match fairly comfortably.
