Gringo Report: Corona, Tijuana claim 2nd-div. title

Joe Corona won the Mexican Liga de Ascenso championship with Tijuana.

With some fantastic play from the right side of the midfield, American Joe Corona helped Tijuana beat Veracruz 1-0 (3-0 agg.) on Saturday to become Apertura 2010 champions in the Mexican Liga de Ascenso.

In the 63 minutes the San Diego native played, he showed some impressive work on both sides of the ball in an effort to shut down Veracruz's dangerous wingers and create some scoring opportunities for his side.

The victory not only gave Tijuana their first-ever title in their short three-year history, but it also means that los Xoloitzcuintles will play off against the Clausura 2011 winners to decide who will be promoted to Mexico's Primera División come Apertura 2011.

Los Pincharratas went down in the 31st, but Gastón Fernández equalized five minutes later and Maximiliano Núñez and Gabriel Mercado each added goals in the second half.

The victory gives Estudiantes a five-point lead over chasers Vélez Sarsfield with just two games left in the Apertura 2010 tournament.

If Estudiantes beat River Plate on Wednesday, they'll capture their first league title since winning the Apertura 2006 crown.
