Galaxy Alumni top Hollywood United

The Los Angeles Galaxy Alumni defeated local L.A. area team Hollywood United 5-1 in an exhibition match on Aug. 20 that took place before the Galaxy defeated FC Dallas 2-0 at The Home Depot Center.

Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas led the way for the Galaxy Alumni, scoring two goals, and Galaxy legend Mauricio Cienfuegos added two more for the Alumni, as they jumped out to an early lead on Hollywood United.

Former French national team member and World Cup winner Frank Le Boeuf scored the lone goal for Hollywood United on a penalty kick.

Cienfuegos (1996-2003) started the scoring off in the 25th minute on a penalty kick, after Hollywood United's Olivier Biaggi brought down the Galaxy's Jerry Laterza (1997). Cienfuegos then beat Hollywood goalkeeper Anthony La Paglia (Without a Trace) to make it 1-0. Just two minutes later, La Paglia made an amazing save on Jose Vasquez (1996-1998) to stop a sure goal. La Paglia came up with another big save on Cienfuegos in the 44th minute.

However, La Paglia could not stop Lalas' shot in the 45th minute off an assist from former Galaxy and U.S. great Paul Caligiuri (1997-2001). Just after halftime, Cienfuegos converted following a Vasquez pass to make it 3-0 Galaxy Alumni.

Le Bouef put Hollywood United on the board and made it 3-1 on a penalty kick in the 49th minute, but the Galaxy Alumni would soon recover as Vasquez found the back of the net in the 56th off a Laterza assist, and then Lalas put the finishing touches on the game with a goal in the 61st minute to make it 5-1.

Zak Abdel (1998-2004) was in goal for L.A. and made six saves, while Alex Bengard (2001-2002), Jose Botello (1997-1999), Robin Fraser (1996-2000), Adam Frye (2000-2002), former assistant coach Jim Liston (1998-2003) and Brad Wilson (1996-1997) rounded out the Galaxy Alumni roster.

Also on the Hollywood United roster was former MLS players Preki, Yari Allnut, Derek Droze and David Vaudreuil, Def Leppard guitarist Viv Campbell, Game Of Their Lives director Danny Cannon, The Cult guitarist Billy Duffy, Galaxy television analyst Allen Hopkins, Sex Pistols and 103.1 FM personality Steve Jones, pop music sensation Nicky Holender and actors Tamer Hassan, Jimmy-Jean Louies, Louis Mandylor, Jason Mathot and Jamal Thomas.
