Dynamo, StatoilHydro help soccer in Galveston

The Houston Dynamo and StatoilHydro teamed up with the Galveston community to regenerate a local soccer field that was devastated by Hurricane Ike last fall at the Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex.

The event came near the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Ike, which hit the Houston area on September 12, 2008. The day began at 10 a.m., when Dynamo and StatoilHydro employees joined Galveston volunteers in working to rebuild the field. At 1 p.m., a press conference was held to recognize the efforts of the involved parties and dedicate the field for use.

"The anniversary of Hurricane Ike reminds us all of the devastation that took place in Galveston, and we are hoping that this effort will make a small contribution in the ongoing re-building process," Dynamo Chief Operating Officer Chris Canetti said. "We are happy to be working alongside Dynamo Charities and StatoilHydro in helping redevelop this soccer field. Soccer plays a key role in enriching many people's lives, and this project will have a positive impact on them."

Later in the day, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the Dynamo and StatoilHydro will host their first Soccer Night Out of the fall. The Soccer Night Out events are designed to bring local communities together for soccer-related games and activities.

"StatoilHydro strongly believes in building a sustainable future for our youth, as we believe they are the heroes of tomorrow," StatoilHydro Vice President of Communications Kjersti Torgersen said. "We decided to donate our team building funds and our time to rebuild soccer fields to help restore soccer activities in the communities affected by Hurricane Ike."
