D.C. United's Freddy Adu takes on the world

Washington, D.C. - D.C. United midfielder Freddy Adu traveled to Holland with The United States Men's National Team Wednesday, after being called up to represent the country at the upcoming World Youth Championships. Adu is in the midst of a ten-day training session with the squad before the opening of the tournament. For the first half of the training, the team will be practicing in the Dutch city of Mierlo. The second leg of training will take the team to the city of Enschede, where their first round of play is scheduled to take place. During their stay in Mierlo, the U.S. squad will play in a friendly against the China U-20 national team Sunday, June 5.


    Adu and his teammates will be competing in the ultra-competitive Group D that includes Argentina, Germany, and Egypt. The U.S. will begin their run at the championship against Argentina on June 11, before squaring off against Germany on June 14, and wrapping up group play June 18 verses Egypt.  All of the team's first round matches will be played at Arke Stadium in Enschede, Holland.  The team's matches can be followed live through ussoccer.com.</p>


This is Adu's second appearance with the U-20 team in the World Youth Championships. His first came in 2003 when the team finished fifth, falling to eventual champions Brazil in the quarterfinals. Adu notched a hat trick in the opening game of the tournament, a 6-1 victory over South Korea.


Through nine games for D.C. United, Adu has seen time in all contests and started four matches. In his second season in Major League Soccer, Adu has recorded one goal and four assists. He currently leads the team in assists and game-winning assists (2). D.C. United is 3-4-3 this season, with their next match on Saturday, June 4, against the San Jose Earthquakes.
