WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United announced today the club has signed goalkeeper Jay Nolly. The 24-year old's rights were originally obtained on December 11 as part of the trade that sent Freddy Adu and Nick Rimando's rights to Real Salt Lake. Per Major League Soccer policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Jay is an excellent young player who will provide solid depth at the goalkeeper position," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "He has a big upside in the game and we look forward to his contributions to our club."
Nolly made seven total appearances (six starts) over two years in Salt Lake, while serving as the primary backup to Scott Garlick. The 6-foot, 3-inch netminder was originally selected in the second round (22nd pick overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft after a highly successful career at Indiana University where he helped the Hoosiers to back-to-back NCAA Championships (2003 & 2004).
United begins competitive play in 2007 on February 21 when it travels to Honduras to meet CD Olimpia (9 p.m. EST) in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) and North Cone, the tournament's broadcast partner for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It will also be shown delayed on Fox Sports Espanol (FSE) at 11 p.m. EST. The club's first home game will take place on March 1 in the return leg versus Olimpia with a 7 p.m. kickoff at RFK Stadium. The home game will be shown live on FSC, FSE and North Cone. Tickets to the home leg are available via www.dcunited.com
