Cruz Azul host Pachuca in CONCACAF Champions League final

Jose Francisco Torres, Pachuca

Cruz Azul want to finally win a trophy after earning the label of eternal runner-up. American midfielder José Francisco Torres and Pachuca are looking to return to the FIFA Club World Cup for the third time in four years.

Obviously, a great deal is on the line in the CONCACAF Champions League final, which gets underway Wednesday with the first leg from the Estadio Azul in Mexico City (10 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel).

Both teams rested their top players during league play last weekend, a clear sign that the prize at stake is of utmost importance to both organizations. This decision was taken despite the fact that neither club is certain of qualifying for the Mexican liguilla (playoffs) with one match remaining in league play this weekend.

The pressure for tonight’s match rests squarely on Cruz Azul, who play at home, where they have yet to lose in this year's CCL campaign. The Azulinos are looking to cash in this time after several recent close calls, including a loss to fellow Mexican club Atlante in the 2009 Champions League final.

One of the most interesting storylines comes on the sidelines. Cruz Azul coach Enrique Meza was formerly the mastermind behind Pachuca’s most successful years, including two CCL trophies and good showings at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007 and 2008.

For U.S. national team fans, Torres should get the start for Pachuca.

The two teams recently faced each other in league play, and Pachuca, fielding a reserve squad, were the better side despite the 2-2 final score.
