After a record-breaking, Supporters' Shield-winning 2019, LAFC kick off their 2020 campaign with an anticipated showdown against Club Leon, with the first match of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 taking place at Estadio Leon. This is the first appearance in the CCL for an LAFC side expected to make a deep run.

Bob Bradley's side have built a South American youth pipeline with 21-year-old Ecuadorian international Jose Cifuentes the seventh South American on the roster under the age of 22. Of course, this match also signifies a return to Mexico for reigning MLS MVP and Golden Boot winner Carlos Vela.

Leon are making their second appearance in the CCL after failing to advance out of the group stage of the 2014/15 competition.

LAFC also added veteran goal-scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips after Adama Diomande suffered a broken foot and traded Walker Zimmerman to Nashville SC for a large allocation haul and additional international slot.
