CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA of Major League Soccer today announced the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Gerson Mayen to a Developmental Contract. Mayen has been training with the Red-and-White throughout the 2008 preseason.
"Gerson is an exciting young player that we've been keeping an eye on," said Chivas USA Head Coach Preki. "We're just now bringing him into the first team and we're hoping that he can make progress and challenge for a spot."
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., on February 9, 1989, Mayen attended Manual Arts High School. Most recently, Mayen played for the Chivas USA U-18 Team during its appearance at the Copa Chivas in Guadalajara in January. During Chivas USA's preseason, Mayen has played in several positions, including central midfield, and right and central defense. His parents, Raúl Armando and Aldanubia, are natives of El Salvador; Mayen is the youngest of five children.
