The Houston Dynamo Reserves remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids Reserves Sunday morning at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Houston goalkeeper Tony Caig made eight saves and set up a goal, while forward Kyle Brown scored twice.
Houston opened the scoring in the 14th minute when right back Erik Ustruck played a long ball toward the top of the box. Brown beat Colorado goalkeeper Chris Sharpe to the ball and sent it past him with a sharp touch.
Brown added his fifth goal of the year in the 36th minute. Following a corner kick, Caig set Brown free with a throw to the center circle. Brown raced 50 yards on a two-on-two counterattack, then fired a left-footed shot from the top of the box through the legs of an advancing Sharpe.
Caig made three saves in the first half, including a crucial point-blank stop in the 44th minute after a free kick fell to Colorado's Jordan Harvey inside the penalty area.
The Dynamo went on top 3-0 early in the second half, when Franco Caraccio headed in a John Michael Hayden corner kick at the back post. Colorado got on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute when Herculez Gomez chipped Caig on a long ball over the top.
Colorado carried play for the remainder of the half, racking up 16 corner kicks, but could not break through until stoppage time, when Seth Trembly bent a free kick over the Houston wall and into the net. It was almost the last kick of the game, however, and Houston walked away with a 3-2 win to improve to 4-0-1 on the season. The Dynamo Reserves return to action on July 4 at Real Salt Lake.
