Borowski bails out Bayern vs. Fiorentina

Bayern Munich put one foot in the knockout stages of the Champions League after earning a late point at Fiorentina on Wednesday.

The Germans, who remain unbeaten in Group F and are top on goal difference, had to come from behind at the Stadio Artemio Franchi with Tim Borowski's 78th-minute effort canceling out Adrian Mutu's well taken early opener.

Bayern could have guaranteed their passage to the next stage with a win, but will be confident of qualification with eight points, alongside Lyon, who beat Steaua Bucharest.

Fiorentina have just three points after four games and have a mountain to climb to make it through.

The Italians lost 3-0 in Munich two weeks ago and were also keen to make amends for a Serie A defeat to Siena at the weekend.

They were boosted by the return of Mutu from a knee injury and Alberto Gilardino from a two-game domestic suspension, and made the perfect start when the former produced a sublime first-time volley to smash home Luciano Zauri's cross from the right after just 10 minutes.

In reply Massimo Oddo forced a save from Sebastian Frey with a shot from outside the box and at the other end his counterpart Michael Rensing brilliantly denied a header from Gilardino.

Despite being only midway through the first half, it was end to end action as both sides traded blows.

Ze Roberto missed a header in the 22nd minute and Gilardino shot wide minutes later, before the latter was again thwarted by a fantastic save from Rensing, who leapt to parry his header.

Bayern finished the first half in the ascendancy with Mark van Bommel shooting over from distance, Schweinsteiger drilling wide and Miroslav Klose firing over the bar from a good position on the edge of the box.

Gilardino was in the thick of the action after the break, with a header which flew narrowly over the bar and a fierce low shot from the right of the box which Rensing did well to parry to safety.

Sandwiched in between those chances was a strike from Klose which he dragged wide of the right post.

Felipe Melo and Oddo both tried their luck from long range unsuccessfully as the Italians looked to extend their lead, and Mutu also squandered a good chance when he headed over in the 56th minute.

Bayern were also pressing forward in search of an equalizer and out-of-favor striker Lukas Podolski, who has played a bit-part role for Bayern so far this season, forced an acrobatic save from Frey in the 68th minute.

The forward had another opportunity minutes later with a poorly directed shot, but team-mate Borowski was more accurate soon after when he curled a delightful strike into the bottom-left corner following Ribery's clever pass.

Klose and Ribery both could have won it for the Germans but the former's shot missed the target and the Frenchman's effort from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by Frey, while Toni Kroos sliced wide in stoppage time.
