East Rutherford, NJ- On June 20th, National Soccer Hall of Famer Marcelo Balboa will return to Giants Stadium for the match up against the Seattle Sounders FC, but this time he won't be on the field. Instead, Balboa will be taking on a different kind of challenge - urging fans to TEAM UP AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER on behalf of the Prostate Conditions Education Council and oncology leader sanofi-aventis. Having been touched personally by prostate cancer - his grandfather suffered from the disease - he is going on the offense to raise awareness about prostate cancer, specifically among men 50 or over or who have a family history of prostate cancer.
Balboa will take his new position at the TEAM UP AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER booth inside Gate D from 6:00 - 7:30 PM to sign FREE copies of the TEAM UP AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER Playbook, an educational brochure available in both English and Spanish, which coaches men and their families on recognizing the signs of prostate cancer and if diagnosed, drafting an all-star multidisciplinary team that includes urologist, radiation and medical oncologists.
The Red Bulls are proud to welcome Marcelo Balboa - the retired defender, who played for the U.S. national team and Colorado Rapids before spending one season with the Metrostars in 2002 - to our stadium to share this important message with our fans.
Balboa remarks, "Taking care of your prostate health is important, so talk to your doctor about risk factors and screening options. Unlike soccer, you don't always get a yellow card warning!"
Balboa was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI in 2005 and elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Balboa currently has his own radio show, From The Pitch, which can be heard at www.warpradio.com. TEAM UP AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER is co-sponsored by the Prostate Conditions Education Council and sanofi-aventis. For more information about this educational campaign, visit www.prostateconditions.org.
