American Exports: Joe Corona returns from broken foot to score in Tijuana's 3-1 Copa MX win

Joe Corona with Club Tijuana

Joe Corona is back.

The 24-year-old returned to the Club Tijuana lineup on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a broken right foot on Oct. 17, 2014, wearing the captain’s armband, scoring and completing the full 90 minutes in Xolos’ 3-1 victory over Necaxa in the Copa MX.

The US international controlled a reverse pass from Ricardo Da Silva with the outside of his right foot and drilled a shot off the underside of the bar and over the line from the edge of the penalty area to level the score on the stroke of halftime. Corona was cautioned in the 37th minute after a late tackle but will now be in contention for his first Liga MX minutes since picking up the injury back in October.

Young midfielder Alejandro Guido also returned from injury – he had been carrying a groin complaint – and scored Tijuana’s final goal after coming off the bench in the 70th minute. Guido was played through on goal inside the area and lofted a deft finish over Nexaca ‘keeper Roberto Salcedo to make it 3-1 to Xolos in the Group 3 matchup.

Also on Wednesday, 20-year-old Tijuana loanee Stevie Rodriguez went 68 minutes for Dorados de Sinaloa in their 2-2 draw with Chivas at Estadio Omnilife in Group 4.
