American Exports: Free agent Zak Whitbread mulling interest from MLS, English Championship clubs

Zak Whitbread with Derby County

AMSTERDAM – Derby County free agent Zak Whitbread has introductory interest from a handful of potential suitors in both Major League Soccer and the English Championship, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

The 31-year-old center back, who officially runs out of contract on June 30, has already been told by the Rams that he will not be offered an extension.

"We're in some discussions [with Championship clubs], but there is nothing concrete at this time," Whitbread rep Kevin Moran confirmed to MLSsoccer.com. "There is also some interest from MLS."

Whitbread shined brightly in 11 Derby appearances last term, but as has so often been the case in his career, injuries stole a large chunk of his season. He missed 32 matches with a nagging hamstring injury suffered last October.

A Houston native who was raised in England, Whitbread has never worked in MLS, spending his entire pro career to date in England with Liverpool, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City. Whitbread has played 79 games in both the Championship and League One, 18 in the Premier League.
