AMSTERDAM – A few Americans clocked in across the pond on Tuesday, with captain Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 returning to winning ways with a 4-1 Bundesliga rout of Werder Bremen.


The home side, for whom DaMarcus Beasley was an unused sub, recovered from a weekend derby loss at Wolfsburg in style thanks to a three-goal second half.


In English Carling Cup third-round action, both Americans saw time as Fulham were bounced by a 2-0 loss at Stoke City.


Clint Dempsey had a few dangerous tries at goal over 90 minutes and Eddie Johnson went close once in his 33 relief minutes.


Two US internationals sat in the dugout to watch their teams advance, while another pair got nights off as theirs were ousted.


Jonathan Spector was a spectator for West Ham United's 2-1 win at Sunderland, while Marcus Hahnemann stepped aside for Wolverhampton's 4-2 extra-time defeat of League One side Notts County.


Meanwhile, Stuart Holden played no part as Bolton fell 1-0 at derby rivals Burnley and Tim Howard served as back-up for Everton's penalty kicks loss at League One Brentford.
