All is Wellington: Hoffenheim save face

Hoffenheim

A late goal from Wellington rescued leaders Hoffenheim from an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Bundesliga basement side Borussia Monchengladbach.

In a battle of promoted teams, Alexander Baumjohann's goal before the interval looked to have earned the hosts a much-needed win until the Brazilian striker smashed home an equalizer in the final minute.

Ralf Rangnick's side remain at the top of the standings with 39 points - two ahead of nearest challengers Hertha Berlin.

Monchengladbach ended a run of five defeats with the draw, but it was not enough to lift them off the foot of the table with the team still four points from safety.

Hoffenheim made the brighter start but could not turn their possession into chances, while Gladbach striker Maro Marin was also proving a handful.

The first clear opening was created by the visitors after 15 minutes when Sejad Salihovic's cross from the left found Selim Teber, whose effort fell inches past the left post.

Hoffenheim's next push forward seven minutes later saw Boubacar Sanogo in space following a Teber cross from the right, but his high volley also went wide from seven yards.

Gladbach finally had a decent chance just before the half-hour mark. Baumjohann passed to Karim Matmour, whose shot appeared to be heading for the bottom left corner until Hoffenheim goalkeeper Daniel Haas made a late intervention.

Home keeper Logan Bailly also did a fine job in the 32nd minute when stopping a dangerous 28-yard free-kick from Salihovic.

And it was Gladbach who took the lead just one minute before the break. Tomas Galasek provided the pass for Baumjohann, who struck a perfectly-placed dipping shot over Haas from 25 yards.

Bailly was again outstanding in the 56th minute when turning away a 20-yard blast by Salihovic.

Hoffenheim then appeared to be awarded a penalty 20 minutes from time when Chinedu Obasi fell under a challenge from Galasek.

But after consultation with his linesman, referee Lutz Wagner changed his mind and instead booked Obasi for diving.

The incident provided the spur Hoffenheim needed and they pushed every player forward in search of the leveller.

Demba Ba struck the crossbar from his spectacular overhead kick with 11 minutes remaining, while Bailly saved efforts by Luiz Gustavo and Marco Terrazzino as the clock ticked down.

But just when it looked like Gladbach would hold on for the win, Wellington produced the equalizer with a powerful header beyond the reach of Bailly.
