Getafe midfielder Juan Albin missed a late penalty to let Real Betis off the hook for some woeful finishing and ensure an exciting game in the Coliseum Alfonso Perez ended goalless.
Albin was given the chance to break the deadlock in the 82 minute after he was brought down in the box by Juan Andreu Melli but he could only cannon his shot onto the crossbar.
It was a real let-off for Betis, who must be wondering what they have to do to score as they endure a drought in front of goal.
Despite investing heavily on the likes of Spanish forward Sergio Garcia over the summer the Sevilla-based side have now failed to find the target in either of their two opening games of the Primera Liga season, despite creating a host of chances in front of goal.
Last week they were made to pay for their wasteful ways in a 1-0 defeat to Recreativo Huelva, but on Sunday Getafe proved just as guilty as their guests of spurning chance after chance.
Plenty was made before the game of the fact that 25-year-old goalkeeper Jacobo Sanz would be making his top-flight debut in the hosts goal following injuries to Argentina internationals Oscar Ustari and Roberto Abbondanzieri.
In the end the Spaniard barely had a save to make as the Betis attack did his work for him, firing high, wide or onto the woodwork time after time.
Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez was the first to spurn a gilt-edged chance to score when he got on the end of a long pass forward from Sergio Garcia and found himself six yards from goal, but his control let him down and he fired high over the bar.
The Chilean continued to waste opportunities during the early stages, the worst of which came after 12 minutes when he went one-on-one with Jacobo in the area but dragged his shot well wide of the target.
Just as Betis were beginning to dominate Getafe signalled their intentions at the other end, forcing Betis goalkeeper Casto Espinosa into a pair of saves on the quarter-hour mark first from Manu del Moral from just inside the area, then from the rebound Javi Casquero.
As the game approached the half-hour mark new Getafe signing Roberto Soldado fired wide before Arzu Garcia cannoned a ball onto the crossbar at the other end.
With half-time nearing and the scoreboard still reading 0-0, the home crowd feared the worst as Achille Emana broke through the defense to go one-on-one with Jacobo again, but once more the Betis midfielder could only find the post instead of the net.
Having barely been worked in the first half the debutant goalkeeper was needed to make a double save five minutes after the restart, first from Mariano Pavone then from Gonzalez.
Then as the game entered the final 10 minutes it looked as though Betis would again be made to pay for missing their chances as Getafe began to dominate.
First Fabio Celestini fired just wide before Del Moral did the same. Then the home fans thought their chance must have come when Albin went over in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
In keeping with the game Albin put his kick on the bar, and there was still time for Jacobo to tip one more shot round the post from Jose Mari before the final whistle.
