Martin Vasquez has joined the Houston Dynamo FC coaching staff as an assistant, reuniting with head coach Tab Ramos. They previously worked together at U.S. Soccer from 2011-2014.
“We feel excited and fortunate to add Martin to our staff,” Ramos said in a club release. “His coaching experience in MLS, Europe and at the national team level, in addition to his playing experience in Mexico and the US, brings tremendous value to our club.”
Vasquez, 57, was an MLS head coach during the 2010 season with now-defunct Chivas USA. He’s also worked as an assistant coach under Jurgen Klinsmann, both at the US men’s national team and Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich. Prior to that he held assistant coach positions with the LA Galaxy (2004) and Chivas USA (2005-08).
Vasquez comes onboard after nearly nine years with Real Salt Lake, including a one-year spell as Real Monarchs head coach in 2019 as they won the USL Championship title. He’s also worked extensively with RSL’s academy teams.
Vasquez was an MLS All-Star in the league’s inaugural 1996 season, playing in 87 games across time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and San Jose Clash. His professional playing career spanned 17 years, with Vasquez featuring for both the United States and Mexico on the international stage. He had stops in Mexico at famed clubs such as Atlas, Puebla and Veracruz.
Houston are heading into their second season with Ramos as head coach, looking to bounce back from a 2020 campaign where they finished bottom of the Western Conference standings.
