LA Galaxy's Jonathan dos Santos: MLS will be one of the best leagues in the world "in four or five years"

Major League Soccer among the best leagues in the world? Jonathan dos Santos said that’s happening sooner than later.

The LA Galaxy midfielder credits the league’s rapid growth in terms of attracting young and experienced players and quality coaching for speeding up the timeline.

“Since I got here to MLS, it's been growing a lot in every sense and now they are signing young players, experienced ones and well-known coaches, and there will be more competition,” the Mexican international told GQ in a Spanish-language interview. “I think that with this speed of evolution we’ll have, in four or five years, one of the best leagues.”

Dos Santos should know. The 30-year-old came up through the famed La Masia academy at Barcelona and was a standout at Villarreal in La Liga before signing with the Galaxy midway through the 2017 season.

At the time, Jona said he received criticism from some in the media for his move. But he said the steps the league has made are indisputable.

“They see the transformation [of MLS] with their own eyes,” Dos Santos said. "The teams treat you really well, the infrastructure is spectacular and it is a cosmopolitan league with Latino players, [players] from Europe and other parts of the world, which makes it balanced, athletic and [good] quality.”
