USMNT teammates Josh Sargent, Weston McKennie score pair of stellar goals

Josh Sargent - Werder Bremen - Celebrate

US men's national team head coach Gregg Berhalter probably has a smile on his face on Saturday.

Two of the most important pieces of the USMNT's young core scored stellar goals on Saturday morning, as Werder Bremen's Josh Sargent and Schalke's Weston McKennie helped their team's get early leads in Bundesliga play.

Sargent earned his first start in over a month and it did not take long for him to score his second goal of the season.

The 20-year-old striker has struggled to make an impact with Bremen this season, who currently sit in 17th place after their 2-2 draw at Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The club are seven points from safety and are likely to be relegated. Sargent's only other goal this season also came against Hertha, on Oct. 19.

Schalke's last win came on Feb. 4 and their winless streak continued on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim. Their lone goal came from an exceptional McKennie solo effort.

The goal was the midfielder's first of the season as David Wagner's team is close to dropping out of the qualifying places from European competition.

Elsewhere in Germany, Tyler Adams made his return to RB Leipzig's bench after returning from his latest injury and center back John Brooks played 90 minutes helped Wolfsburg keep a clean sheet against Adams' team in a 0-0 draw.

The US return to action later this month with friendlies against the Netherlands and Wales and Berhalter will be hoping he'll have a full squad of in-form players for those matches.
