The LA Galaxy’s quest to bolster their defense this offseason included Ajax rejecting the five-time MLS Cup winners' bid for Mexico national team defender Edson Alvarez, according to a report from De Telegraaf.

The Dutch newspaper outlines that Galaxy and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur were both interested, though no agreement was reached. Alvarez, who moved from Liga MX side Club America to the Eredivisie powerhouse last July for a reported $17 million, has made 21 appearances with two goals since the transfer was completed. The De Telegraaf report also cites Alvarez missing his family, plus how his playing time has decreased after the new year.

Alvarez would provide LA’s defense with a boost, as the versatile 22-year-old has already earned 31 caps for Mexico and was part of their 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup-winning side. He also helped Club America lift the Liga MX 2018 Apertura and Copa MX 2019 Clausura titles.

In last weekend’s 1-1 draw at the Houston Dynamo, the Galaxy started Costa Rica international Giancarlo Gonzalez and former LA Galaxy II standout Nick DePuy at center back. Aside from Daniel Steres, the club is somewhat thin in terms of other center-back options. Alvarez can play there, as well as right back and at defensive midfield.
