What MLS team has the most penalty-kick shootout losses?

Sad Jozy Altidore - Canadian Championship

Toronto FC’s penalty-kick loss to the rival Montreal Impact Wednesday in the Canadian Championship at BMO Field was the club’s third shootout defeat in a major competition in the last three years, following heartbreaking losses in the 2016 MLS Cup final and 2018 Concacaf Champions League final.

That’s tough to swallow for Toronto FC fans, but it could be worse. The Chicago Fire and San Jose Earthquakes have double the amount of PK ousters. MLS originals D.C. United and the LA Galaxy follow with five defeats apiece with the Galaxy falling in the 2009 MLS Cup and 2017 SuperLiga finals on penalties. It should be noted that Toronto have lost the most penalty-kick shootouts in finals.
