The on-again, off-again transfer saga of Gary Mackay-Steven to New York City FC appears to be on again.

The Aberdeen winger is reportedly currently in Manchester undergoing a physical ahead of signing with NYCFC, according to Sky Sports Scotland, while The Scottish Sun confirmed the Scottish international was heading to MLS.

“I think the New York City [opportunity] will be something that will be difficult one for him to turn down,” Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes told Sky Sports Scotland in a phone interview. “If that plays out, as I think it may do, I think he may well go there.”

It’s been a topsy-turvy few days for the 28-year-old, who reportedly was set for a move to English League One side Portsmouth after failing to agree to a new Aberdeen deal.

Mackay-Steven was the subject of transfer rumors to NYCFC in February when the Aberdeen Evening Express reported NYCFC was planning to offer him a pre-contract to sign at the end of his current deal.

He scored 16 goals and 10 assists in 72 appearances in two years with Aberdeen, but Mackay-Steven has been hampered by injuries. A concussion suffered against former club Celtic in the League Cup final in December was followed by an ankle injury in the Scottish Cup that sidelined him until mid-May when he returned for a 13-minute substitute appearance against Hibernian on May 19 in the club’s Scottish Premiership finale.
