Where does Atlanta and New York's chase for various MLS records stand?

Aaron Long Miguel Almiron - New York Red Bulls Atlanta United - Chase

Atlanta United and the New York Red Bulls are chasing MLS history, some of which was set all the way back in... 2017.

Last season, Toronto FC made their claim as one of the best MLS teams in league history and both the Red Bulls and ATL have the chance to outdo some of those records just one year later.

With each team facing two games left in the season, where does Atlanta and New York's chase for the record book stand?

Supporters' Shield

Despite how great their season has gone, Atlanta are not runaway favorites for the Supporters' Shield: The Red Bulls still sit just a point behind after each team won this weekend. With two games left in the season, this race seems destined to run until Decision Day.

  1. Atlanta United: 69 pts (2.09 PPG)
  2. New York Red Bulls: 68 pts (2.06 PPG)

Most Points

Last season, TFC broke the all-time points record with 69. On Sunday, the Five Stripes matched them and they will have a chance to pass Toronto on Decision Day presented by AT&T. The Red Bulls could also pass TFC's record next Sunday.

T-1. Toronto FC (2017): 69 pts
T-1. Atlanta United (2018): 69 pts
T-3. LA Galaxy (1998): 68 pts
T-3. New York Red Bulls (2018): 68 pts

Most Points Per Game

Only four teams in MLS history have registered 2.0 points per game, with Toronto becoming the fourth in 2017, finishing on 2.03 ppg. Atlanta and New York will both be at or above the mark this season.

1. LA Galaxy (1998): 2.13 ppg
2. Atlanta United (2018): 2.09 ppg
3. New York Red Bulls (2018): 2.06 ppg
4. Miami Fusion (2001): 2.04 ppg
5. Toronto FC (2017): 2.03 ppg

Most Wins

In the post-shootout era (since 2000), this record was held by the 2014 Seattle Sounders and 2018 Toronto, with 20 wins. Both Atlanta and New York surpassed that record with their 21st wins on Sunday.

T-1. Atlanta United (2018): 21 wins
T-1. New York Red Bulls (2018): 21 wins
T-3. Seattle Sounders (2014): 20 wins
T-3. Toronto FC (2017): 20 wins
T-5. LA Galaxy (2011): 19 wins
T-5. San Jose Earthquakes (2012): 19 wins

Most Goals Scored

The 1998 LA Galaxy squad holds the record for most goals with 85 and Atlanta sit with 69 after putting two past Chicago. No matter how vaunted their attack, 85 goals is untouchable for this season. They have a chance to crack the top five next week. The Red Bulls, with 61, aren't likely to join them.

1. LA Galaxy (1998): 85 goals
T-2. Toronto FC (2017): 74 goals
T-2. D.C. United (1998): 74 goals
4. San Jose Earthquakes (2012): 72 goals
5. D.C. United (1997): 70 goals

Best Goal Differential

The 1998 Galaxy (+41) logged the best goal differential total in league history. Atlanta's GD is currently +29, sitting just off the top five. The Red Bulls aren't far behind with +28.

1. LA Galaxy (1998): +41
2. Toronto FC (2017): +37
3. LA Galaxy (2014): +32
4. Atlanta United (2017): +30
T-5. San Jose Earthquakes (2012): +29
T-5. Atlanta United (2018): +29

Most away wins, post-shootout era

Atlanta have officially shattered the away wins record in the post-shootout era, with 10. That beats four other teams who set the bar at nine wins on the road. The Red Bulls have seven away wins and, with only one game outside of Red Bull Arena remaining, they will not crack this list.

1. Atlanta United (2018): 10 wins
T-2. San Jose Earthquakes (2005): 9 wins
T-2. LA Galaxy (2010): 9 wins
T-2. Seattle Sounders (2011): 9 wins
