How does Sporting Kansas City become “rivals” with a club in Sweden?

With a little help from a FiveThirtyEight article and a bit of inspiration from The Cauldron supporters’ group’s social media manager, of course.

FiveThirtyEight recently ranked IFK Goteborg 334th in their latest global club soccer rankings, one spot ahead of 335th place SKC. Kansas City fan Zach Cobb, who runs the @KCCauldron Twitter account for The Cauldron, decided to have a bit of fun with those rankings, defending SKC’s honor by going at the Swedish club with a few tongue-in-cheek tweets.

Swedish outlet Goteborgs Posten picked up the story on Thursday, speaking to Cobb about his tweets and SKC’s newfound playful “rivalry” with Goteborg. In addition to standing by his tweet that jokingly called out the lion on Goteborg’s crest, Cobb expressed some hope that SKC and Goteborg could start a friendly rivalry out of his social media blitz.

Goteborg right back Emil Salomonsson sounded OK with the idea of an SKC rivalry, too.

“It sounds fun! I haven’t really thought about the idea of having more rivals than we already do, especially not from another country, but this just seems like a jest and I really like people that do things with a quip,” he told GP. “USA is a great country for a holiday, so maybe we can go there for a training camp and face Kansas City in a game?”
