US international Julian Green was named to Bayern Munich’s first team on Tuesday, marking the first time in the 21-year-old’s career that he’ll be on the German giants’ full squad for a Bundesliga season.

Green, who has appeared for Bayern in the Champions League but has yet to make his Bundesliga debut, had said it was first team or bust for him in Munich this year. The attacker has endured a rough couple of years since scoring for the US at the 2014 World Cup, going on a disappointing loan to Hamburg in the 2014-15 season before spending last season with Bayern’s reserves.

He enjoyed a solid preseason with Bayern’s first team this summer, scoring a hat trick against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup and drawing praise from first-year manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Green will face a tough battle for playing time in Munich, where he’ll have to contend with Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Douglas Costa, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and others in the club’s loaded attack.
