The New York Red Bulls announced on Friday a contract extension for head coach Jesse Marsch, the 2015 MLS Coach of the Year.

In his first season with the club last year, Marsch led the Red Bulls to the Supporters’ Shield, racking up an 18-10-6 record and a league-best plus-19 goal differential. After a slow start to this season, the Red Bulls now sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 6-7-1.

“Jesse is an excellent person and the perfect coach for this club,’’ Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a club release. “I am excited that we agreed on a new contract. I enjoy working with Jesse every day and he continues to has an exceptional impact on the success of our club.’’

With a 24-17-7 overall record, Marsch has the fifth-most wins of any coach in club history behind his predecessor Mike Petke, Bob Bradley and Octavio Zambrano and Hans Backe, who share the franchise record with 41.
