MLS Fantasy Rewind: NYCFC's David Villa is king in Round 8

David Villa - New York City FC - Celebrate

Start spreading the news. I’m leaving today. I wanna be a part of it...New York, New York!

That’s right ladies and gents, New York’s MLS teams were kings of MLS Fantasy Manager soccer over the past round. The Red Bulls did this with one dominant performance over FC Dallas, while New York City FC were the darlings of the double match week.

David Villa was the man to captain this past round, with his brace against Vancouver and a bevy of bonus points adding up to a 21-point performance. He was joined by three teammates: the legend Tommy McNamara, who had an assist in each game, Josh Saunders, who saved a penalty against Vancouver, and RJ Allen, who missed the second game with a lateral ankle sprain but scored a goal in the first to tie Sporting KC's Matt Besler for highest scoring defenders.

The Red Bulls contributed three players to the Dream Team this past round. Felipe and Sacha Kljestan each had a goal and an assist to make the team’s five man midfield, while Sal Zizzo added an assist to his clean sheet bonus.

Top scorer amongst midfielders was Lee Nguyen, who managed six attacking bonus points over the two New England Revolution games last round.

Will Basler had the top score in round 8, with their Struggle City FC managing 137 points in the double match week. Will had the foresight to captain Villa, and also had dream teamers Besler, Kljestan, and Saunders contributing. Well done and enjoy your prize!

I’m gonna make a brand new start of it…

So here’s what to pay attention to this week:

  • Transfer deadline is Friday, May 6th at 7:00 ET.
  • The Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union are on a bye this round.
  • In round 10 both the Fire and Union are on a double.

If you haven’t played your wild card yet, hold onto it for next round. If you have played your wild card, it might be worth stashing your Fire and Union players on the bench instead of transferring them out.

Real Salt Lake are about to head out on a five match road trip while Rio Tinto Stadium is renovated. Long road trips due to stadium renovation are somewhat common in MLS these past few years, and they tend to be draining. Over the weekend RSL defender Justen Glad turned in yet another notable fantasy performance, but while he’s caught my eye I’m wary about the wear of that road trip.

I’m making my transfers this week thinking of how I want to play round 10. The Rapids, Dallas, Dynamo, Timbers, SKC, and Whitecaps join the Fire and Union with two games over the round, so that’s a good place to concentrate your efforts. Happy hunting!

How did you do this past weekend? How are you planning your transfers? Let us know!
