Benny Feilhaber "focused on playing right now" instead of contract status

FRISCO, Tex. – Benny Feilhaber has found a professional home with Sporting Kansas City for the past three years. But what of his status with the 2013 MLS Cup champs following this season?

Feilhaber's contract ends at the conclusion of this year’s campaign, a team spokesperson confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Monday. But even with some speculation about his future, Feilhaber isn’t putting any stock into anything past the week-to-week grind on the pitch.

“I’m just focused on playing right now,” Feilhaber told MLSsoccer.com. “I haven’t been in any negotiations with the club in any way. I’ll just take that as it comes.”

Feilhaber has scored twice and assisted on one goal in his three starts this season and is coming off his best MLS season, certainly, and arguably his best as a professional. He scored ten goals and notched 15 assists in 2015 en route to being an MLS MVP finalist.

This season, SKC is off to a 4-3-0 start after dropping their last two matches, and Feilhaber was sidelined by injury for the first three games. And even while they sit in fourth place in the Western Conference at the moment, Feilhaber knows the squad has talent to compete for the highest honors this season – a big reason he’s leaving his attention on the field and not his future.

“There can’t be any thoughts right now,” Feilhaber said. “We’re in the middle of a season. We want to do something special here. We want to win the Supporters’ Shield, we have the Open Cup, [and] we have Champions League as well. So we have a lot of things to focus on, and that’s my focus right now.”
