The search for the “next big thing” in North American soccer is right around the corner.
Details of the 10th edition of Sueño MLS – a continent-wide talent search – will be announced Sunday on Univision during República Deportiva, starting at 3 pm ET. Former Mexican national team goalkeeper and Sueño MLS ambassador Adolfo Rios will unveil the three 2016 host cities, tryout dates and registration details.
Sueño MLS has played a role in discovering some notable names over the years, including Jorge Villafaña, who helped the Portland Timbers win MLS Cup last year. Villafaña, then known as Jorge Flores, emerged from a pool of 2,000 players in 2007 to win Sueño MLS and ultimately earn his first pro contract.
Other past winners include current C.F. Monterrey forward Gabriel Funes Mori, and his brother, Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori, along with others who have gone on to play for MLS academy teams, universities, youth national teams and with professional sides around the world.
