CD FAS 2, Montreal Impact 3 | CONCACAF Champions League Match Recap

Again, the Montreal Impact finished the game shorthanded against FAS. And again, they held on.

Despite playing down a man for the final 17 minutes, the Impact secured their second win in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night, earning a 3-2 result against El Salvador representative FAS in San Salvador.

Marco Di Vaio scored twice and Andres Romero added another for Montreal, while Jorge Moran and Marcio Teruel replied for FAS after the Impact built a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes.

Ignacio Piatti, back in continental competition after winning the Copa Libertadores with San Lorenzo this month, kicked things off for Montreal in the sixth minute. With the outside of his foot, Piatti found Di Vaio on the edge of the box. Di Vaio swiftly fed the ball through to Romero, who finished into the side netting with his left foot.

Piatti was back at it seconds later. Dilly Duka’s through ball down the left ricocheted off Moran and reached Piatti. The Argentinean placed his cutback into the path of Di Vaio, who shot low past ‘keeper Adolfo Menendez.

Cruelly involved in Montreal’s second goal, Moran redeemed himself in the 32nd minute. A corner kick was only partially cleared by the Montreal defense, and Moran blasted a shot from outside the box that deflected off center back Wandrille Lefèvre and past goalkeeper Evan Bush.

Both teams would then add a goal from the penalty spot in the first quarter-hour of the second half. FAS made it 2-2 through Marcio Teruel in the 51st minute, after Jonathan Aguila drew a foul from Karl W. Ouimette. Nine minutes later, Piatti was brought down while trying to recover a floating ball near the byline.

Menendez guessed right on Di Vaio’s spot kick but couldn’t get a hand to it.

Referee Paul Enrique Delgadillo Haro made a third crucial decision in the 73rd. He produced a second yellow card for Montreal midfielder Felipe, who fouled Carlos Aparicio in front of the Impact box. It was a second red in two CCL games for Montreal, after Hassoun Camara’s during the teams’ opening match in Montreal on Aug, 5.

 Montreal assistant coach Mauro Biello – in place of the suspended Frank Klopas – withdrew Di Vaio for left back Maxim Tissot, and his team kept all three points.

The next game in Group 3 will see FAS travel to New York Red Bulls on Aug. 26. Montreal are back in CCL action on Sept. 17th, when they host the Red Bulls.
