D.C. United managing partner Jason Levien said in a television interview on Sunday that he is optimistic about the club’s plans for a soccer-specific stadium at Buzzard Point, and hinted that more information about the stadium’s progress will be revealed in September.
Levien appeared on Comcast SportsNet at halftime of D.C. United’s 4-2 win over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday night and discussed the Buzzard Point project and the involvement of local politicians.
“Last time I was on, I said I was cautiously optimistic about the stadium,” Levien said in the interview (above). “I am going to tell our fans out there we are ready to remove the ‘cautiously’ from that statement.”
Levien watched the game Sunday with city councilmember Muriel Bowser, who has emerged as a leading candidate to become D.C.’s mayor in November. Levien said Bowser has been “very supportive” of the Buzzard Point initiative and that getting her involved in the progress of the stadium will be critical.
Bowser spoke to D.C. United fans before the game on Sunday as part of an event for the National Kidney Foundation event, featuring former DCU player Clyde Simms.
Levien said that Bowser has brought in a consultant to evaluate the stadium project and that the club is working with the consultant to help push the project through local government and gain approval.
“When the [DC City Council] comes back from recess the second week of September,” he said, “we’re going to see more movement publicly…
“We’re feeling pretty optimistic, we’re working hard and we’re making real progress because of the leadership from members of the council and in the mayor’s office.”
