Will you add DaMarcus Beasley to your team?
When DaMarcus Beasley finalized a move back to Major League Soccer after a decade playing overseas and in Mexico, MLS fantasy owners' ears perked up about the possibility of acquiring the US national team defender for their own side.
But how much was it going cost? And what position would he be listed at? We asked you for your thoughts on the conundrum (see full conversation HERE).
In short, fans were split on all accounts – 50/50 on position while price suggestions ranged from $7.5m all the way up to $10.5m.
On Friday morning, these answers were finalized, as Beasley was entered into MLS Fantasy Manager with an initial price point of $8.5m and positioned as a defender.
But does Beasley consider himself a left back? Yes and no.
“I see myself as a defender. Wherever [Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear] is going to put me is where I fit best into the team I’ll play it,” Beasley told the Houston media. “Do I still have the midfield mentality sometimes? Of course. Do I still want to score goals? Of course. I never have that out of mind when I play. But I do have a job to do, being a defender, and that’s to defend and that’s my first job.”
The brains behind MLS Fantasy looked at several factors before finalizing the details on Beasley. Rather than list Beasley as a midfielder who could also play left back, the safe bet was to assume he could spend significant time on the backline.
Similarly, Philadelphia's Amobi Okugo played all of last season at center back. This after he was initially drafted as a central midfielder. Being listed as a midfielder in 2013 limited Okugo's points in a big way. As a defender, he would've lost a few points in games in which the Union conceded two-plus goals, but the 11 clean sheets Philly secured would've netted him an additional 33 points.
With recent reports suggesting (more HERE) the Houston Dynamo are close to landing Honduran midfielder Luis Garrido, Beasley's midfield opportunities are likely to be sparse.
