Jose Torres with Tigres UANL

American Exports: Jose Torres, Edgar Castillo battle it out in Liga MX opener

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jose Torres and Edgar Castillo were in direct competition against each other for most a Saturday matchup between Atlas and Tigres UANL, with neither getting the upper hand in a 0-0 draw at Estadio Jalisco in round one of matches in the Liga MX’s Apertura 2014.

Torres started the contest on the left wing, but was switched to the right after around 15 minutes and found himself marked by Castillo.

There was some hard tackling between the pair, with Torres at one point asking the referee to pull out the yellow for one foul by Castillo, just before the Texan was taken off in the 68th minute.

Left back Castillo – making his Atlas debut – linked well with left-winger Maikon Leite in the first 45 minutes, but was quieter during the second half. He did go over in the area in the last play of the game claiming a penalty, but the referee waved it away.

Herculez Gomez also made his league debut for Tigres, coming on for Emanuel Villa in the 74th, right after Tigres striker Marco Rubén was sent off for his second bookable offense.

Tigres came closest to scoring in the 66th, when Uruguayan international Egidio Arévalo’s deflected shot hit the bar.
