Montreal Impact add to depth at central midfield with signing of former La Liga player Gorka Larrea

Gorka Larrea

The Montreal Impact arguably have more experience in central midfield than any other team in MLS after Wednesday's signing of Gorka Larrea.

The 30-year-old Spanish midfielder played for Real Sociedad and Levante in La Liga and registered more than 100 games in the Spanish second division.

Larrea, who trialed for the New England Revolution during the most recent offseason, fills the spot on the midfield depth chart vacated after the trade that sent Collen Warner to Toronto FC.

He joins Argentine Hernan Bernardello (27 years old, played in Spain and Argentina) and former Canadian international Patrice Bernier (34 years old, played in Norway, Denmark and Germany) in the battle for a starting spot in the heart of the Impact lineup. Utility player Callum Mallace has also filled in at the position.

The Impact host D.C. United on Wednesday night (7:30 pm ET, TSN/RDS in Canada, MLS LIVE in US) and the club has indicated to MLSsoccer.com that Larrea will be available for selection.
