Montreal Impact 0, Sporting Kansas City 3 | MLS Match Recap

MONTREAL – Sporting KC put on a clinic against 10-man Montreal on Saturday afternoon and left Stade Saputo with a 3-0 win, their second against the Impact this season.

Dom Dwyer – twice – and Paulo Nagamura scored for Kansas City, who remain first in the Eastern Conference with 17 points. Ninth-placed Montreal, with six points, could fall to 10th if the Chicago Fire get a result at New York on Saturday night.

The Impact played shorthanded for much of the match after a 17th minute red card to midfielder Collen Warner. A Matt Beslerlong throw – a considerable factor in KC’s 4-0 win against Montreal three weeks ago – bounced in front of Troy Perkins' net, and as Uri Rosell tried to capitalize, Warner fell and clawed the ball away from the line. Referee Jair Marrufo produced the red card for Warner, and Dwyer’s penalty kick to the bottom left corner beat Perkins, who had guessed correctly.

Already pinned back before Warner’s dismissal, Montreal saw Sporting KC double their lead in the 34th minute when a Chance Myerslow cross evaded everyone but Nagamura at the far post. Nagamura then finished back across goal past a scrambling Perkins.

Dwyer added his second in the 64th minute, when Toni Dovale released him through on goal between the Montreal centerbacks. Dwyer made no mistake in front of Perkins, slotting the ball home to the ‘keeper’s left. It was Dwyer’s sixth goal of the season, four of which have hit the back of a Montreal net.

Kansas City kept the ball comfortably in the late stages to preserve Erik Kronberg’s league-leading fifth clean sheet of the season, though a long Justin Mapp effort in the 86th minute narrowly missed. Their possession numbers approached 80 percent by the end of the game. 

Sporting KC's next match is at home this Wednesday, May 14, against the Philadelphia Union. Montreal are also in action on Wednesday, as they play the return leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal against FC Edmonton, in which they 2-1. The Impact are back in MLS action next Saturday, May 17, at D.C. United.
