Just when you thought that things were beginning to slowly turn around at Toronto FC, the Canadian club suffered another setback on Wednesday.
Designated Player Matias Laba tweeted news that he had "fractured the big toe, out for a month" along with a photo of his right leg in an immobilizer.
Shortly after Laba's tweet, the club confirmed the toe was fractured during Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew, but the prognosis from TFC is a little more conservative than Laba's: four to six weeks.
The 21-year-old has started each of the 16 matches in which he has appeared since his signing on April 26 from Argentinos Juniors. Laba was the centerpiece of a roster rehaul that was just beginning to bear fruit with a 2-2-1 record in their last five matches.
TFC, who are yet to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs in their previous six seasons of MLS play, are currently second from bottom in the Eastern Conference and 16 points out of the fifth and final playoff berth with 10 matches to play. Their next match is set for Saturday at RFK Stadium against East cellar-dwellers D.C. United (7 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
