Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens out 3-4 months with broken forearm

Matt Pickens winces in pain after breaking his arm

The Colorado Rapids announced Sunday that goalkeeper Matt Pickens will be out 3-4 months after suffering a fracture in his left forearm during Saturday’s match against Real Salt Lake. Pickens underwent successful surgery on Saturday night in Salt Lake City, and traveled back to Denver with the team on Sunday.

The injury occurred in the fourth minute of the Rapids’ 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday in a collision with RSL defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe. Pickens was removed from the match and transported to a local hospital, where he was evaluated and surgery was performed.

Backup Clint Irwin played the rest of the match on Saturday in his first MLS appearance. He'll compete with Steward Ceus for the team's starting spot when the Rapids take on the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on March 23.
