American Exports: Howard helps Everton to FA Cup quarters, Holden features for Bolton

AMSTERDAM – Tim Howard notched six saves in backstopping Everton to the FA Cup quarterfinals with a 3-1 replay victory over visiting mites Oldham on Tuesday.

The US No. 1, who has now lost just once in his last 10 matches in the annual tourney, stayed on course to reach the third final of his career. The next obstacle on the road to Wembley is regional rivals Wigan, who will visit Goodison Park to battle for a place in the final four on March 9.

In Championship league play, Stuart Holden worked his longest competitive shift since September of 2011 in Bolton's 1-0 victory over guests Peterborough.

The former Houston Dynamo ace entered in the 24th minute as an injury sub for Mark Davies, taking up the right side of midfield. Holden helped Wanderers post their third straight win at the Reebok, which also boosted them four rungs to 10th place.

Meanwhile, Zak Whitbread went unused as Leicester City topped Blackburn 3-0. Thanks to their first win in February, the fifth-place Foxes pulled to within five points of the second automatic promotion elevator with a game in hand.
