American Exports: Chandler comes up big, Bocanegra sits

AMSTERDAM – Timothy Chandler helped FC Nürnberg claw level in stoppage time on Sunday, setting up the 2-2 equalizer against visiting Hannover 96.


The right back got loose down the flank to serve a pinpoint cross for Sebastian Polter to stab home at the near post. It was Chandler's first assist since the start of November, when he teed up the late winner at Wolfsburg.


The draw kept Nürnberg undefeated in three, while also nudging them 10 points clear of the relegation mire.

Around the Bundesliga, Fabian Johnson lost the early scorer as Hoffenheim dropped a 1-0 derby decision to visiting Stuttgart. The left back did not account for Martin Harnik, who put home the game's only goal at the back post. Daniel Williams also started for the hosts, leaving after 54 minutes with a yellow card.


The loss was Hoffenheim's first in four at home, but they stayed in the survival playoff spot, 10 points adrift of a safety position.


One floor down in the 2.Bundesliga, Andrew Wooten bagged his fourth goal of the season in Sandhausen's 3-1 relegation derby defeat at Dynamo Dresden. After narrowly missing the target with a 30th minute header, the right winger tied the match with a hearty lash from the right channel near the hour. The loss dipped Sandhausen below their Sunday hosts and into the automatic drop zone.


To the far east in Turkey, Maurice Edu put in another strong performance in Bursaspor's 1-0 home victory against Elazigspor. The fast fan favorite saw yellow while helping the hosts own midfield. By winning consecutive Süper Lig games for the first time this season, the Green Crocodiles also tentatively climbed into third place.


Austrian Bundesliga action saw Terrence Boyd on for the final 25 minutes of Rapid Vienna's 2-1 home derby loss to league leaders Austria Vienna.


The US international appeared to level the match with a firm header 13 minutes from time, but the centering feed was ruled to have gone over the touchline before the reaching Boyd. The Green-Whites slipped 13 points off their local rivals' title place and three back of Austria's second Champions League invite.


In Portugal's honor division, Tony Taylor worked the last nine minutes of Estoril's 2-1 loss at Marítimo. The seventh-place visitors have now won just once in five league games to fall six points out of a Europa League slot.


Finally, Carlos Bocanegra watched from the dugout as Racing Santander fell 1-0 at Recreativo Huelva. The result halted a two-game win streak, putting the away side five points from the safety zone.
