AMSTERDAM – A pair of Americans saw Capital One League Cup action in England on Tuesday, with Mike Grella (above, playing for Leeds) scoring a spectacular goal on his Scunthorpe debut, a thrilling shootout victory at Derby County.

The League One side trailed by three goals at the break, and then again when the New York native fired home off the far post from a sharp angle on 63 minutes.

Scunthorpe still trailed 5-3 into stoppage time, but hit twice in the waning moments to send the game to extras. After a scoreless overtime, Grella missed the opening spot kick of the shootout, but his side rallied to take it by a 7-6 count.

Conor Doyle was an unused sub for Derby.

Meanwhile, Will Packwood made his first appearance for Birmingham City in a 5-1 rout of guests Barnet.

The teen defensive handyman deputized at right back for injured Brums skipper Stephen Carr, putting a solid 75-minute shift before departing with a knock of his own.
