Revolution rookie Rowe strikes brace to best Red Bulls

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rookie Kelyn Rowe provided another jolt to the already-reenergized New England Revolution with a two-goal performance as the Revs topped the New York Red Bulls, 2-0, at the Desert Diamond Cup on Saturday.

A drab affair, the match featured a mostly reserve Red Bulls side -- no Thierry Henry, no Rafa Marquez, no Joel Lindpere -- that spent its time stifling the Revolution attack, led by Rowe and Benny Feilhaber. The Revs pushed and finally broke through in the 77th minute.

Feilhaber collected an errant pass from Red Bulls striker Corey Hertzog and ran at the defense. He slipped a pass through to newly acquired striker Saer Sene, whose shot was blocked by a defender and prone goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo. But far from saving it, Vuolo's intercession redirected the ball to Rowe, who calmly slotted it into the open net.

With the Revolution thirsting for more blood, Rowe got the ball out wide right in the 84th minute. He strove into the New York area, cut back to his left foot, and fired a perfect shot into the upper 90 past Vuolo's outstretched arms.

The Revolution are now 2-0 in the Desert Diamond Cup. They next face RSL on Wednesday, 8 pm ET. New York are 0-2 and take on the LA Galaxy on Wednesday, 10 pm ET. Both games will be streamed live on Channel 1
