NEW YORK – The Colorado Rapids announced on Monday that they have re-signed Colorado-native Brian Mullan to a multi-year contract. The midfielder was acquired by the Rapids at the trade deadline in 2010, and helped lead the club to its first-ever MLS Cup two months later.
The five-time MLS Cup winner was delighted to put pen to paper with his hometown team.
“I’m very happy to have signed a new contract with the Rapids, and excited to continue my career here in Colorado,” Mullan said in a statement released by the club. “It has been great to be able to play in my hometown, and I’m already looking forward to next season."
Mullan, 33, joined MLS in 2001 and has reached the MLS Cup Playoffs in each of his 11 seasons. The tough-tackling midfielder has won championships with the LA Galaxy in 2002, San Jose in 2003, back-to-back with Houston Dynamo in 2006 and 2007 and the Rapids in 2010. Along with Jeff Agoos, Mullan has won more MLS Cups than any other player in history. He has also played a total of 279 regular-season games, scoring 27 times and adding 49 assists along the way.
Re-signing a player who boasts Mullan’s experience is sure to have a positive effect on the Rapids rebuilding process, after head coach Gary Smith left at the end of the 2011 season.
Technical director Paul Bravo certainly believes so.
“Brian has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the league, a player with an impressive track record of success, and we’re thrilled that he will continue to play an important role for our club,” Bravo said. “He’s a dedicated, passionate player whose hard work and skill provides an example both for players already in our club and for youth soccer players across Colorado.”
Per league and team policy, further details of the contract were not disclosed.
