American Exports: Nguyen eyeing options in Europe, MLS

AMSTERDAM — Erstwhile Becamex Binh Duong attacker Lee Nguyen is currently exploring new options in Vietnam, MLS, Denmark and Portugal, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

The 24-year-old former US international was released by "Chelsea Viet Nam" last week, exercising a league clause that essentially allows clubs to opt out of short contract remainders when a player is injured for an extended period.

Nguyen, who has been out of action since March, is nearing full fitness while rehabbing back in his native Dallas — but Binh Duong chose to save coin by letting the country's highest-paid pro athlete go.

"We are looking at a number of different options, including a few teams in Vietnam, MLS and back to Europe," Nguyen rep Patrick McCabe told MLSsoccer.com.

The Texan, who remains in wait for the verdict on a Vietnamese citizenship application that could stop him counting against the league's strict foreign player limits, scored twice in just five games with Binh Duong.

Prior to joining them on an 18-month deal last March, Nguyen had suited up for PSV Eindhoven, Randers FC and Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
