DC's Brettschneider aims to be matchday regular

Blake Brettschneider scored the lone goal for D.C. in their Carolina Challenge Cup win on Wednesday

D.C. Unitedā€™s lone Supplemental Draft pick, Blake Brettschneider, signed his first professional contract just last week, inking a developmental deal with the club.

Since then, he earned the start at forward for DC in the Carolina Challenge Cup on Wednesday night alongside Charlie Davies and scored the lone goal in Unitedā€™s 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire, the clubā€™s second straight win in the competition.

ā€œGetting to play with [Davies] is a great experience,ā€ Brettschneider told MLSsoccer.com by phone. ā€œHeā€™s a very good forward, knows what heā€™s doing. He's been around and been in some very big games.ā€

The midweek tally increased Brettschneider's preseason goal total to four. And while heā€™s not getting carried away with those numbers, signing the contract came as a relief given all the hard work he's put in after being drafted.

ā€œItā€™s a little weight off your shoulders and makes things a little bit easier,ā€ Brettschneider said.

Even though heā€™s now an official member of the team, the former University of South Carolina player is concentrated on improving. Heā€™s been working hard and closely observing the veteran forwards on the squad like Josh Wolff and Joseph Ngwenya.

ā€œIā€™ve got great older guys to learn from,ā€ Brettschneider said. ā€œEach day when I go to practice, I try to watch them and study them and try to pick up on the little things I can do better and make my game better.ā€

One thing that caught the attention of the coaching staff while he was playing at South Carolina was his versatility ā€“ and heā€™s been used out wide during the preseason in addition to striker.

ā€œIf you ask him, he doesnā€™t really care,ā€ assistant coach Chad Ashton said. ā€œHe just wants to get on the field.ā€

With a spot on the roster secure, the next hurdle for the 21-year-old is earning some minutes on the field. The competition will be fierce and although the reserve team seems more likely in the early going, Brettschneider wants to suit up on game day with the senior side.

ā€œLike anyone on this team, you want to play,ā€ he said. ā€œThe next step for me is getting in and being part of the 18 to dress for each game, getting to travel.ā€
